Common Core

Common Core

It's good to be back to work!  Unfortunately, the project I am currently working on is a bit top secret (wink).  The ideas are in the beginning stages.  This is when pencil scribbles flow like NANOWRIMO scripts, and ideas swirl and morph into curious adventures beyond one's dreams.
I love this part!!

I hope to carve a few hours for myself to paint this week.
See you then blogging peeps!

Hey blogging peeps, I'm back!  I had to catch my breath from all the excitement of ArtPrize.  Did I mention how amazing it was?  The food, the music, the art, the people...  there's nothing like it!
Before I take Common Core down From its venue, I wanted to point out a few more details... just in case you're in Grand Rapids this weekend and stop by to see it in the lobby of the Waters Center 161 Ottawa.
Here we go:
"What's in the Middle," peeking through the fun vibrant pink of the funnel represents the unknown of where our tax dollars go.  Exactly what determines the cost per student in public education?  What is that equation?  How much is funnelled into other third parties and so on.
The "What can I do," represents the parents who are frustrated and want change.
I took this phrase literally.  I asked myself what could I do.  My answer?  Create art to speak on my behalf and hope to inspire conversation on this topic.
My question to you is, what can you do?

"I can," represents the parents' moto on the parent brigade fund raising funnel.  We are taking action to support our schools.

"Math about me," represents my frustration with a hint of snarkiness.  I feel that as a parent, we are constantly pouring funds into our kids' educational experience.

the tiny scissors... yeah, this is for all the little cuts here and there that add up to massive budget slashings.

This week, I am going to share photos of words and phrases I cropped out of recycled student assignments to strengthen my statement for my painting:
And I circled the areas in pink...
Just above the run-down sign advertising an award winning pool, I have "Michigan" just above it.  Michigan used to have the BEST public schools.  Now we do not.

To the right of the sign, also tying into how public schools used to be, is the phrase, "they went to music". This represents the cut backs in our art and music programs, and how some schools have lost them completely.

"I am a good student," represents the kids who have not been given the chance to succeed.

Good morning, Blogging Peeps! I'm back home from my first stay in Grand Rapids for ArtPrize.  I was hoping to blog while I was there, but I was too excited to share and talk about my entry to everyone and ANYONE who would listen to me (lol). But here are a few clips from my experience...

This is Michael... he plays these incredible hand carved violins across from my mural painting.  Notice his display?  It looks like a music sheet, and the violins look like music notes!  How awesome is that?

This is Brian...
If you do make it to ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, which I hope you do, you must go to the Waters Building on 161 Ottawa!  As you walk into this beautiful example of modern architecture, the space opens up into this vast lobby with 20 foot tall samurai to greet you.  These incredible sculptures were created by Brian and let me tell you, you will be in awe of these structures built using chairs.  This is a must see!

This is Shaun...
After walking past the chair samurai, you will be struck by the strength and sheer talent of Shaun's painting!  Ok, side note on this guy, he made it to the final 25 last year in ArtPrize, and I kinda stalked him.  Just a little.  I'm a big fan of his work, and so this was exciting to have my photo taken with him.
And then, my entry is just a few steps away, across from Shaun's painting, next to the elevators.
This has been an incredible experience!

 Finished.
Through this process, I have learned a few things...
1.) Art is therapy.  When I began this project a few months ago, I was angry and upset over what I had seen, heard, and read.  Now, I feel exhausted, but triumphant.  It still saddens me when I think of the issues within public education funding, but I feel like my painting speaks for me.
2.) I have an amazing group of friends who are there for me.  No matter what.
3.) My family has my back.
4.) My husband must really love me.  I have destroyed our front living room, the bathroom sink is clogged with paint, I have not cooked in I don't know how long... and yet he continues to support me.

My painting, "Common Core" will be displayed in the Waters Center during ArtPrize 8.

Final touches :-) I had to clean up some of the kids and add the little pools of water

I'm not sure if you noticed, but I repainted the diver.  Yep.  After sitting through countless mornings, sipping coffee, it finally hit me.  The diver was diving away from the pool occupied by her colleagues.  Now, it looks like she's facing us a little more :-). I'm sure my neighbor had a good laugh watching me stand (and wobble) on top of a slide in my swimsuit acting this out.
This type of humiliation is a snippet of what I do for my art.
Until next week, blogging peeps...

Good afternoon blogging peeps!  Today I'm going to share another before and after.  This one illustrates the high ranking officials not feeling the pinch (or should I say drought) as a result of budget cuts.  Here, you will notice one of the characters jumping into the hot tub, cannonball style.  The issue (besides the greed factor), I was not thrilled with the size nor the rendering.  So what did I do?
I repainted him.
Then I noticed he was "floating" above the water.  How can one make a big splash while hovering over water???

So, I pulled the water up, covered his toes, giving the illusion of plunging in.  I like it!
By the way, did you notice the words "Who's the Boss?".
I find it fitting the location.

Good afternoon blogging peeps!  Here's my latest and greatest, only a few weeks left until ArtPrize -yikes!!
As you will notice, I added more detail to the parent brigade pyramid structure, fine-tuned the kids gathering near the bottom of the waterslide, and enhanced the slide itself (my favorite). I'm not going to bore you with stories of me screaming at my Mural, or the names I have called it this past week
Just be sure to know that I, Wendy Popko, still love to paint and create, and I have made amends with Common Core.  We will stand side by side at ArtPrize to share our interpretation of public education funding...

It's a pool party!

Good morning blogger peeps, I thought I would post before breakfast this morning. Who am I kidding, my three cups of coffee count as my breakfast!
Onto the pool party...
As you can see, I was struggling with painting an empty pool -the walls, the curved bottom edge, and the shadows. So what does one do with these issues?
First: change the music you're listening to.  I know it sounds odd, but if you're like me and you listen to the same selection on your iPod or even the same radio station, change it up.  I'm talking alternative to jazz, headbanging metal to blues.  Yep, these are my jams.
Second:

Build yourself a pool out of paper.
Then go back, and repaint.
Much better :-). Not sure if you noticed, but a few more kiddos joined the pool party!

Blue

First of all, yes, I'm aware I posted yesterday and am not due for another week. I feel like there is something you should know about my ArtPrize entry, and I'm waiting for my coffee.
Can you see those little blue lines dotting the image?  That's painter's tape covering words and phrases I cropped from the recyled student assignments I painted on.  Phrases such as, "make it make sense", "fantasy:counting coin vs. reality: fun with fractions" are just a few I must protect to reveal to the viewer and strengthen my opinion toward budget cuts in public education.
As you will notice, there's a lot of blue tape.  If you are planning to visit ArtPrize in Grand Rapids this fall, I encourage you to stop by and hunt for these phrases, and many more.  My painting will be on display at the Waters Building!

Good morning 😃
Ah yes, the kiddos are beginning to emerge from the depths of the empty pool...
And yes, I painted a few in shades of grey. This is my way of saying there are kids in the system that need assistance, but due to budget slashings, they miss out.

 I'm getting there...

The new, and improved bus!

The old, blah, oversized, out of proportion bus.

I'm going to need more coffee

Good morning, I thought I would post early.  I normally wake up around 6:30, sit down in front of my Mural with a cup of coffee, and go over my plan for the day while the day is quiet.  It's the only time I can hear myself think.
And then I paint.
Today I noticed something was off, and then realized it was WAY off!  My school bus, the bus I was so proud of, must be repainted, resized, and reperspectived (I know, that's not a word.  I'm still on my first cup of coffee.). The bus needs to be re- everything.  So, I will begin my mission now, wish me luck, and hopefully I can repost before the day comes to an end.  I really liked that bus...

Adding more details to the figures in the foreground

Good evening!  I'm wrapping things up for the day on my ArtPrize entry and onto banging out a couple 4x6 inch illustrations to sell at a book sale tomorrow:-) I will be using the funds to help offset travel and lodging expenses at ArtPrize.  But before I go, I just wanted to share with you what I have worked on this week.  I wanted to start adding more detail to the families lining up to leave.  I can relate to the kids' faces, and their disappointment of having to leave the water park too soon.

Weekly check-in

Good morning😃
I wanted to share this photo with you today.  As you will notice, I altered the images in the foreground to fit the design better.  It's amazing how many mistakes you can find in a simple sketch when you enlarge it!  While I was at it, I made additional changes to the characters.

See you next week!

My weekly check-in

Okay, I'm going to be completely honest... I never show my work while it's in progress.  Never.  This is a first for me.
The section I worked on this week focused more on the parent brigade and the pay-to-play activities.  If you saw the original sketch posted on ArtPrize, you'll notice I've made a few adjustments.

One of the problems I ran into was that these kids were out of proportion to the other side of the mural, and so I repainted and enlarged them.
Grrrrrrrrrrr!!
